Hero Dogs

 In Friends of Toto Blog

In honor of Veteran’s Day, it makes sense to pay homage to those smart military service dogs who do so much to protect our troops overseas and at home.  I suspect when someone thinks of a military dog, they innately think of the German Shepherd.  I know I do.  It’s interesting to know though that the various breeds that are actually used in military roles includes Boxers, Dobermans, Bully Breeds, and . . . . wait for it . . . Yorkies!  Yes, peanut sized, 4 lbs Yorkies have played military roles in the past.  Their size is such that it allows them to get into places that our troops wouldn’t be able to access and therefore save time wiring and digging paths for humans to do the work!

I also think its important today to remember the special dogs that have become companion dogs to our retired military personnel.  More and more, it seems that modern psychology calls for dogs to play a healing role in PTSD victims.  In fact, do a web search today on “hero dogs” and you’re going to come up with a ton of organizations that train and unite dogs to help our wounded vets.  Locally, I’ve had the pleasure of working with NEADS.org.  They do some amazing work.  Check them out if you get a chance and, perhaps, in memory of all of our Veterans, consider making a donation!

To any readers who are or are related to a veteran . . . sincerely . . . we thank you!  We enjoy so much because of you and your sacrifice.
